The Headway ABI Story
Care with dignity.
Support with respect.
Progress with pride.

Our Story
Headway ABI began when a group of people on the Gold Coast, each with a family member who acquired a brain injury (ABI), recognized the need for specialized care and support for their loved ones. Incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act 1981, the group launched as Headway Gold Coast Inc in July 1986, changing to Headway ABI Australia in October 2017.
Headway ABI provides services from Coolangatta to South Brisbane. Our participants are referred to us from various sources, including Gold Coast and Brisbane hospitals, community and disability services, clinics, family, friends and self-referrals.
People with complex disabilities, caused by an ABI, require long-term physical and neurological rehabilitation to improve their capacity to return to the community and/or family. Headway ABI recognized a lack of specialized services and support after discharge from hospital. We established the first transitional disability ABI accommodation on the Gold Coast as well as the Wings Wellbeing Centre, which provides cognitive and functional rehabilitation through exercise therapy.
To improve our services, resources and support for our participants, their families, carers, friends and the Gold Coast community, we regularly undertake fundraising activities.
Headway ABI‘s Board of Directors are responsible for overseeing our strategic direction and governance. This voluntary group is committed to serving the Headway ABI community through professional, dignified, relevant and sector-leading service. The participants’ needs, goals and choices are the first priority when our Board makes decisions.
A New Start
Transitioning from hospital
Leaving hospital is an important step in your ABI journey. Here on the Gold Coast, Headway ABI helps you to make this transition and prepare for the challenges to come.
For example, should you still require assistance with everyday tasks, it might mean you are not quite ready to return to the family home. Don’t worry, that is all part of transitioning from hospital. The good news is that Headway ABI will determine the care and support you need, and ensure arrangements are in place in a safe, caring and respectful environment.
This process begins in the lead-up to your departure from hospital as Headway ABI works with you, your carer or social worker. We will then develop a service agreement tailored for you.
Our support services include:

Support Coordination

Support Accommodation

In-Home Support

Social And Community Participation
